Running

Injuries, Treatment and our Running Club

Running is an extremely healthy activity that carries numerous benefits. These include:

Cardiovascular health and fitness – reduced blood pressure and heart disease
Increases bone density
Improved muscular strength, endurance and physical capacity
Reduces risk of cancer
Improved glucose regulation, reduced diabetes risk
Promotes better sleep
Improved mental health and mood, reduced anxiety and depression
Increases cognitive function, reduced cognitive decline and Alzheimers

However, running and jogging are associated with high injury rates.

Approximately 50% of runners will get injured each year!

This is where we come in. The team here at St Leonards Physiotherapy have a wealth of experience when it comes to running injuries. We can diagnose and treat your injury and prescribe you through the necessary exercise program to get you back on track and running again.

Some common running injuries include:

Heel Pain – Achilles Tendinopathy and Plantar Fasciopathy
Knee pain – Patellofemoral (kneecap) pain, ITB pain and Patella Tendinopathy
Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy
Gluteal Tendinopathy and Hip Bursitis
Bone Stress Injuries
Muscular strains and injuries – calf, quadriceps, hamstring
Groin pain
Lower back pain

Runners often get injured due to training errors – progressing their running too quickly in intensity or volume. There may also be things that should be addressed regarding running technique, strength and flexibility deficits, and suboptimal footwear. Following an injury, recurrence rates are high, often due to inadequate rehabilitation and poorly structured training upon returning to running.

Whether you’re an experienced runner or a beginner, St Leonards Physiotherapy are here to help. Even in the absence of injury, we can provide appropriate guidance, advice and tailored exercises to help you reach your running goals. Many injuries can be prevented with appropriate training planning and adjunctive strength and conditioning. We will also look at things holistically with you. Less obvious factors might be relevant, including nutrition, sleep quality and mental health considerations. With our background in Exercise Science and Rehabilitation and Sports Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists have the expertise to get you back on track.
